Mr. Orr said "It was a remarkable sale - even the last few bulls in the catalogue were making $6000 and $8000. 9 sires sold for Stud purposes, including two over $40,000 and 3 over $20,000 Lot 1, Turihaua Theodore E29 sold for $44000 to Andrew and Anna Laing, Sudeley Angus Stud and Jono Reed, Grampians Angus Stud.

Even with these sale highs many clients were able to pick up a top sire for under $6000. Sires by Turihaua Crumble were very sought after and sold exceptionally well to both stud and commercial farmers. Sires by Turihaua Foreman, Waiterenui Theo and Turihuaa Trojan also sold well. Turihaua Yearlings sell like hot cakes

There was a good turnout and total clearance at the first yearling bull sale in the Gisborne district held at Turihaua Station this week. Hamish and Angela Williams' Angus stud sold 27 yearling bulls for an average of $4537 with the Turiroa and Kaharau studs paying the top money of $7500 for the second sire into the ring. PGG Wrightson auctioneer Bruce Orr said all involved in the industry congratulated the Williams' family on the well presented line of yearlings on the iconic East Coast property. "It is not the first time yearlings left here but the first time they have sold under auction." Studmaster Hamish Williams said his son Paul had been in charge of the yearlings and had done a great job. Mr Orr said they were ahead of other yearling stock he had seen and the cattle were a credit to him, especially on the tough hill country where they have been. Mr Williams said the bulls were not specifically for yearling mating, although there were some among the offering that were suitable for that job. By using yearlings, farmers can bring their breeding programme forward and increase herd fertility over time. The bulls selected on their calving ease and moderate birth weight estimated breeding values (EBVs). The sale got off to a good start and was solid throughout.
